Scene Not Heard: in-depth interview with Jorge Boehringer about Prague experimental scene

Everyone knows that New York, Berlin, and London have historically vibrant communities of artists… places like Vienna, San Francisco, and Montreal are hubs of activity… but at Intransitive, we’re curious about what it’s like to make music and sound art outside of the established centers of culture. Our regular Scene Not Heard column asks artists to tell us about where they live, and how the place influences the sounds they make. I spoke with Jorge Boehringer, an American ex-pat who performs music as Core of the Coalman and teaches Sound Production and Experimental Media at Prague College, what it’s like to make abstract music in the Czech Republic.

Lyžaři vibrujících měst (Lidové noviny, 22. ledna 2011)

Zdá se, že nejen mezi zdejšími muzikanty, ale i v českém publiku už dozrála první generace, která přirozeně přijímá novou hudbu. Co způsobilo ten posun a co se z něj o sobě můžeme dozvědět? Zčásti se tu dál rozvíjí příběh ambientní hudby, košatí však do mnoha nových žánrových podob - od náročné abstrakce po nový pop. Temně romantickou „hudbu rozkladu“ rozvíjí Jan Klamm v duu No Pavarotti, které vystoupilo mimo jiné na festivalu Creepy Teepee. Petr Ferenc recykluje zvuk starých elpíček v gramofonovém duu s Michalem Brunclíkem Birds Build Nests Underground. Tomáš Procházka se s Ferencem sešel v „easy listening noise“ skupině Radio Royal, dále je členem kapel B4 a Gurun Gurun i divadel Handa Gote a Buchty a loutky. Architekt Ivan Palacký je nejvýraznějším českým volným improvizátorem poslední dekády a tvoří nejabstraktnější pól ve škále oslovených hudebníků.
